Loving Your Spouse without Spending a Penny PDF Print E-mail
Written by Angie Reedy

altValentine’s Day is almost here. Some of you may be expecting to receive sparkling treasures or oodles of red roses, but others of us have a dramatically reduced gift budget for the year and are wondering how to express love under these new constraints. But who says love can only be expressed through extravagant gifts?

Loves Me, Loves Me Not PDF Print E-mail
Written by Beth K. Vogt

altI was most definitely a good mom one day last week. I surprised my caboose kiddo Christa with a gift she thoroughly enjoyed. "Thank you, Mom! Thank you, Mom!" Christa punctuated her gratitude with hugs and kisses.

I was glad Christa liked her "sprizzie" (aka surprize gift.) I was glad she was so grateful too. Later that night, she leaned over, gave me yet another impromptu kiss and said, "Thank you for my gift, Mom."

Push-ups are not my kind of fun! I’d like to say I like exercise, but I’d be lying. It’s not that it hurts. My biggest problem these days is that it kind of bores me. But that doesn’t stop me from plugging away at it - at least most of the time. Because even if I can’t see the results, I’m going on faith that the outcome will be worth the effort.

Recipe: An Awesome Apple Pie (with a few twists) PDF Print E-mail
Written by Genny Heikka

altThis apple pie recipe has a few twists in it that make it healthy: spelt or kamut flour instead of white, maple syrup instead of sugar, and butter instead of shortening. You can even make a gluten-free version if you want by using rice flour. And one of the best things about the pie is that it's super easy to make...

Hearts, You Made an Impact! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Megan

altWhen I attended my first Hearts at Home conference, I never dreamed how it would impact my life. I thought maybe I would learn something that might help me be a better mom. I even thought I might leave encouraged. And if neither of those things happened, I felt pretty sure that I would have a fun "girlfriend" day with my sister and friends.

The conference met all my expectations, and gave me a small headache to boot (information overload!). It also made me want to come back. Seven years and 3 kids later, I haven't missed one.

The Power of a Name PDF Print E-mail

There’s something about hearing our name that gets our attention. When I’m speaking to a store employee or restaurant server, and I call the person by name, it sure does get a better response. It just makes it more personal and has a positive effect. It’s true with friends, my husband, and my kids, too.

And moms know that in a family, when a first, middle, and last name are used – well, now you’re talking serious business which is not so positive. My daughter, Emily, told me that my granddaughter, even at age five, already knows this important tool.

Speak Love to Your Kids without Spending a Penny PDF Print E-mail
Written by Angie Reedy

altI love you. Te amo. Ich liebe dich. Je t’aime. Do you know what love language your child speaks? You may be speaking love by showering him with gifts, but he actually feels most loved after spending quality time with you. Dr. Gary Chapman outlined the five languages we are made to give and receive love with in his book, “The Five Love Languages.” There is also an edition focused on children. The languages Dr. Chapman has identified are gifts, acts of service, quality time, physical touch, and words of affirmation.

The Husband of My Dreams....? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jim & Lynne Jackson

altWhen Jim and I were first married, I was sure that my fun-loving, handsome, gregarious husband was a real catch, the man of my dreams! Except… I wasn’t sure he was as serious about the important things in life as I wanted him to be. I journaled specific spiritual goals for us as a couple. In retrospect, they were really more of an indirect listing of performance standards, unmet expectations, and fears. When he found out about it, he was hurt and angry that I had an agenda for his spiritual growth. He somewhat accurately interpreted this as my lack of acceptance and respect for him as he was.

Fun in the Snow PDF Print E-mail
Written by Angie Reedy

altThe Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting a less than average amount of snow for most of the country in 2010. Despite this good news, some of you may already be counting down the days until you can put the snow shovel in the back of the garage. But don’t let the good times snow can bring pass you by. Go beyond snowmen and snowforts by enjoying snow in these creative ways.
