101 - When Life & Faith Fall Apart: Lessons Learned Since I Knew It All

Have you come to a place (or been brought there kicking and screaming perhaps) where many of the life and faith answers you once so readily dispensed just don’t seem to cut it anymore—with yourself? Have you come “undone” by a varying totality of life’s relational and spiritual realities: dreams shattered? Kid going off the rails? Church life dead? Spiritual funk? Then exhale, my sweet friend, and join Julie as she shares lessons learned over a 4.5 year long “undone” journey; lessons which will help you:

  • Sit in the pain (Seriously, it’s more freeing than you can ever imagine).
  • Discover (and speak) powerful short-n-sweet truth. Bring your Bible, ladies.
  • Identify divinely removed support pilings of your life and faith.
  • Identify and restore (perhaps) what has ‘slipped’ in your life.
  • Understand the “In. With. For.” relational power of God towards you.

102 - The "Stoopid" Years

Sticking with teens through wonky hormones, suspect behavior, and painful indifference—theirs and yours. Ah, yes, the 5- year, 60-month teenage stage of parenting can do a number on you and your teen’s objectivity, confidence, and family relationships. Join Julie as she couples personal mom/teen experience (180 months total thus far, but who’s counting?) with raw honesty, developmental insights, and much needed humor, which will help you:

  • Grasp a basic developmental overview of your teen’s emotions and overall makeup—as well as yours as an adult.
  • Learn why you need to let your teen ‘off the hook’—as well as yourself.
  • Dress your Mom-body with solid guidelines.
  • Identify the “stoopid” ruts of communication between you and your teen.
  • Choose to stick with your teen despite “stoopid” behavior on both your parts; choose to show up emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and physically in his life as well as yours.

Gleaned from decades of practical experience, Registered Nurse and Funny Gal Sally will make you LOL as you learn how humor can be an extremely valuable tool in your parenting bag (and you do not have to be a comedian to do it!).

This session will help you:

  • Learn creative ways to help make getting into God’s Word a fun and desired activity for your kids.
  • Experience games and activities from a “players” perspective.

Children and Babies

Children are very important to Hearts at Home. However, our experience has shown that the crowded conditions and active pace of the day are not conducive to children or babies. In order to limit distractions to other attendees, babies and children will not be allowed in the main auditorium events or workshop rooms. Please begin making childcare arrangements now. If you want to bring your baby and a caregiver to care for him/her while you are in main auditorium events or workshops, they are welcome to be in the Exhibit Hall/Ballroom or the lobbies of the buildings. We appreciate your cooperation. A private pumping area will be available for nursing mothers. You are responsible for bringing your own equipment and storing breast milk should you desire to do so.

Lunch at the Conference

If your registration included lunch, your schedule will list that and will list the pick up location. Vegetarian and Gluten Free lunches may be ordered when you register, but due to the quantity of lunches, we are unable to accommodate for food allergies or other special food requests.

If your registration does not include lunch, there are a few restaurants within the Bone Student Center where you can purchase a lunch. You may also bring your own lunch from home.

Lunches may be eaten in the common areas and in most workshop rooms. It will be announced during the morning main session if there are any rooms where food is not allowed.

109 - LET. IT. GO.

Women are wired to control. We make sure the house is clean, the meals are prepared, and everyone gets where they need to be on time. Trying to be in charge of everything can not only be exhausting, it can also sometimes earn us the label of “control freak”. But is controlling other people and our circumstances our job or God’s? Maybe we need to stop trying to run the show and start learning to walk in faith. This humorous, yet practical workshop will enable you to:

  • Discover where you fall on the “control freak” scale.
  • Determine the difference between being conscientious and being controlling.
  • Take control of your schedule while also allowing for the unexpected interruptions.
  • Implement new thought patterns and proper reactions to the people and situations in your life that make you kick into over-control.
  • Practice the fine art of soul control where you control your emotions when you can’t control the situation.

110 - The Bylaws of In-laws and Outlaws (with Mary Steinke)

Get ready to get real about the blow-ups as well as the blessings inherent in interacting with your extended families. Karen and Mary will share how to:

  • Effectively and biblically address extended family conflicts.
  • Handle holiday hassles with grace, strength, and unity.
  • Build boundaries that are tangible, measurable, and have built-in consequences.
  • Improve extended family relationships over time.

We know that parenting is wonderful, but can we admit there are "those days" when it's hard, and sometimes we lose our cool? Suzie Eller invites you to give yourself grace in those moments, but to also explore why we might lose it, and how that knowledge helps the next time (because there is always a next time!). Suzie will help you:

  • Change your tone and words (and your relationship) as you listen to the message you might be sending to your child.
  • Restore calm as you balance self-nurturing with nurturing everyone else around you.
  • Reduce negative interaction as you give actions and words time to catch up with your emotions.

Suzie will help you:

  • Increase your confidence in your ability to be a mom. . . even if no one ever showed you how.
  • Relate more closely with your child as you toss out words or actions that are familiar, but not necessarily healthy.

119 - Kill the Spider: Find Solutions for Children’s Problems

Would you like to figure out why children misbehave the way they do? Why their attitudes are less than great? If you don’t, changing children’s attitudes or behaviors is like sweeping away the spider web rather than killing the spider. The problem/attitude will come back. Dr. Kathy will help you:

  • Improve children’s behavior, decision making, and attitudes by determining how they’re rooted in unmet needs.
  • Strengthen relevant core need(s) when determining which ones are connected to problem behaviors or attitudes.
  • Understand how to teach life-changing content that defines each need so children will believe these truths.

120 - Parenting Tech-Savvy Children: Decreasing Negative Effects of Digital Technology

Because of the technology children use and play with, they can be described as the I-deserve-choice, control-alt-delete, instant-everything, relationship-based-beliefs, I-need-to-win, multitasking, it’s-all-about-me, entitled-generation. What does all of this mean for the way we parent them? Dr. Kathy will help you:

  • Understand how eight different types of digital technology influence children’s beliefs and behaviors.
  • Adjust children’s uses of digital technology so you can better connect with them.
  • Understand how to positively plug into their desire to improve the world.

Women receive countless ideas about what it means to be a great mom from the surrounding culture. But which of these ideas actually reflect what God intends and expects? Susan Merrill

Susan Merrill is a wife, mother of five, director of iMOM.com, want-to-be blogger, author of The Passionate Mom, (releasing March 2013, Thomas Nelson), and the very imperfect Merrill family manager. She loves to analyze life, ponder possibilities, and pray for opportunity. She truly believes that all things are possible if one is willing to persevere through trials, seek the truth, and boldly embrace new and unique solutions. That belief has led her down some interesting parenting paths including adopting two older children the exact ages of two of her biological children, the delicate diplomacy of living with diverse personalities, exploring and experiencing every type of school imaginable for every type of child, and parenting special needs in our not so special-need oriented world. Susan lives in Tampa, Florida with her handsome hubby, author and President of Family First, Mark Merrill, and two, or depending on the day, up to five of her children ages 17 - 23. On those days, she loves having a valid excuse to ditch all of her responsibilities to run a bed and breakfast /laundromat for college students.

125 - Fear Not: 3 Ways to Stop the Cycle of Fear, Worry, Anxiety, and Panic

Most moms worry about their children. Most of my worries follow a little pattern that can spiral out of control without me even noticing. It springs up as a little pang of fear, it picks up speed swirling in worry around my brain, it spins me downward in a funnel of anxiety, till I bottom out in a puddle of panic. When I land I am a mess – depleted, confused, and useless. The circle of fear – worry – anxiety – panic is a circle I want out of! And it is possible! Explore with me 3 ways to stop the cycle of worry so that we become useful rather than useless moms.

126 - The Passionate Mom: Protecting Your Child in the World

How is it possible? How can you protect your child when they can hold a window to the world in the palm of their hand? The speed of cultural change is faster than a mom trying to catch a falling baby. We must dare to parent differently today. We must develop perception and we must formulate a plan. You can do it! Just as you would find the adrenaline to catch that falling baby, you can find the passion to protect your child until he has the wisdom to navigate this world on his own. Explore the daring possibilities of protecting your child in today’s world.

  • Increase your confidence to make right decisions for your family and stand firm against adult peer pressure.
  • Experience a newfound peace by adopting the attitudes needed to successfully live with less.
