Book Giveaway: The S.O.S. for PMS: Practical Help and Relief for Moms release PDF Print E-mail

ImageItÙs time for another book giveaway! We're excited about a new book by popular Hearts at Home speaker and author Mary Byers, and five of you can win a copy!

Mary, the author of The Mother Load and How To Say No and Live To Tell About It, has written her newest book, The S.O.S. for PMS: Practical Help and Relief for Moms, which offers practical help for moms struggling with symptoms of premenstrual stress. Mary takes a long look at some of the problems PMS can cause -- depression, anxiety, and guilt -- as well as ways to deal with them.

"I wrote this book for any woman who suffers from PMS symptoms, but especially for moms who become Dr. Jeykll and Mrs. Hyde once a month," Mary says. "I've struggled with PMS for years and it's getting worse as I age. When I learned that other moms were struggling as well, I decided I had a good excuse to learn how to proactively manage it -- and then share what I learned with other women."

Using stories from fellow sufferers, Mary describes symptoms moms might overlook and  offers practical ways to manage them. She suggests foods and activities that can help, and clues readers in to some things that might actually aggravate symptoms.

"There's actually a lot we can do individually to change our response to PMS each month," Mary says. "Most of it is free and simply requires paying more attention to how we treat our bodies when we're premenstrual. I've worked hard at modifying some of my own habits and have been pleasantly surprised at how much more control I have over my thoughts, actions, and emotions each month now when I have PMS."

Mary has included a section describing God's first aid for depression, anxiety, and stress. Recognizing the toll PMS can take on a mom's relationships with her family and friends, Mary has also included a section designed to help husbands understand what women experience, suggesting ways he might help.

"PMS doesn't have to hurt your relationship with family members each month. It is possible to develop a proactive plan that allows you to continue to meet your family's needs while addressing your symptoms each month," Mary says.

If you suffer from PMS or know someone who does, Mary's book is like a conversation with an understanding friend, giving you practical ways to deal with the challenges of PMS.  The S.O.S. for PMS: Practical Help and Relief for Moms by Mary Byers is currently available in bookstores or online.

To enter the Hearts at Home The S.O.S. for PMS: Practical Help and Relief for Moms book giveaway, please leave a comment on this blog post describing why you'd like a copy of this book. Five winners will be drawn and announced on October 28.

Oh my I would love to win this book - perfect timing I'd say as I am recently diagnosedwith PMDD (pre-menstral disphoric disorder). My guess is that this book would be so helpful. I was at the conference in Grand Rapids this weekend! Oh what a spirit lifting wonderful time. I even hugged a mom I had just met at lunch ... we cried together as we shared some heart stories and now she and her family are on my prayer list. I love that! Thanks for a great opportunity to win this new book!

i would love to win this book! PMS has always been a struggle for. For some reason it seems to be getting more pronounced as I age. I want so much to understand this, so I can figure out how to make life more manageable when PMS comes around.

Age vs. PMS
written by Megan, October 06, 2008
This book would be a valuable resource for me. Since I am a young mom, most of the time I have PMSy symptoms, people blame it on my immaturity or age. When I try to explain that Aunt Flo is coming to town, no one seems to understand. I hope this book will help me and my family and friends better understand how I tick and how they can tock right along with me during all four weeks of the month!

What a perfect resource.
written by Jen, October 06, 2008
I have recently started tracking my 'mood' and feelings and it is definitely PMS! I hate how I act and none of the resources I have found incorporate God so it's hard for me to totally grasp without that. This looks like a perfect resource for where I am right now, and what I need. I would love to win this, but if I don't honestly I will look for it in the bookstore!

Where was this years ago?!!!!!!!!
written by Jennifer, October 07, 2008
PMS is never a friend. Nor is it an explanation for everything that's going wrong. It causes extreme elation to go to direct rage, in the course of a nano second; complete happiness to crying frustration just because there is no parking space and you're running late!!!

Any additional help for women, as well as their spouses, is greatly appreciate. I would benefit greatly from the information in the book. My PMS will be around for a while. (My husband is sure to point out when its ugly face is showing!!!) More knowledge is always more power.

First hand experience
written by Heidi, October 07, 2008
This weekend I went to a Christian conference with my pre-teen daughter. I had another mom totally lash out at me in a manner that really surprised me. This was the first socail activity I had ever done with this parent and the way she treated me was SO out of characteristic for who I thought she was. I would assume that she was either having some mental illness issues or PMS and I happened to get the end of it. Not only was it hulmilating, but it really hurt my heart the way she spoke to me. But on the other hand it gave me a glimps into how when I am dealing with PMS could make others feel if I chose to act on how I "feel" at the moment. After this experience God gave me a look at how I NEVER want to treat others, even though I am not feeling well. I would love to win this book to be able to learn other ways to "survive" during PMS, then just what God showed me this weekend.

I would love to win a copy of this book. I am interested in learning to manage my moods and other PMS symptoms so I can be a better person to be around during my monthly cycle. I also have seemed to have worse symptoms as I age. I have a preteen daughter that will be dealing with these things in the future as well and would like to be able to share the things I could learn from this book with her so that she can learn to manage them from the beginning.

Out of Body Experience
written by Tylette Lloyd, October 07, 2008
I would love to have a copy of this book because each month I seem to have an out of body experience. It's as if I can see myself as this crazy woman but can't doing anything about it. Although lately, just reminding myself that I am experiencing PMS and that this too shall pass has been very helpful.

I hate pms. It is like an alien has taken over my body, and instead of myself, some shrew is in my place. It's like I can see myself doing it, know I should stop, but it feels almost impossible. I'd LOVE to win this book and see some practical solutions to this problem. smilies/smiley.gif

I would love to win this book. I do struggle with PMS some, of course, and would love to know of some natural ways to deal with it. But I would also love to share this book with my sister who has struggled for years with very severe PMS (the Jekyll and Hyde knd), and has not been able to find a remedy that works long term from the doctors that she has went to. She is so frustrated and needs some more hope.

I have struggled with PMS for years. It has interfered with life in a thousand ways. Now as a mother of two little girls age 2 and 3 I find even more reasons to get answers. Presently on Prozac and off of chocolate. Yuck1

looking for help
written by Kitty, October 09, 2008
Like others have said who wouldn't want to win this book. I've never entered anything so I feel weird doing this but if there is something out there that can help me change my habits and actions that is great thing to hear. In the end it's my family...my children that suffer when I can't control myself and have to go in a room and cry and then when I finally calm down go and apologize to my kids. Obviously if I don't win the book I will still go out and buy it.

I have been plagued by the physical and mental anguish of PMS my entire life. Early, as a teenager and young adult, my doctors dismissed it as simple PMS and said there was very little I could do to relieve the symptoms. Finding information was limited. After I was married and had children, my symptoms only increased over time until I was facing 3 weeks of each month with physical pain and uncontrollable mood swings, causing my family to suffer along with me. Three years ago, at the age of 36, after a tearful visit to my doctor, she finally diagnosed me as having PMDD and I was placed on medication. The medication has given me at least 2-1/2 weeks a month where I feel "normal." It helps but creates its own set of problems, as well, and I would prefer to find a better way to find relief. However, I am encouraged to know that more information is available. No woman should have to go through severe PMS without hope and support and information. My prayer life and the prayers of my friends, and the knowledge that God is in control, gives me hope and support. This book would be a valuable asset to finding relief and helping me cope. Thank you for this opportunity and addressing this issue. God Bless your ministry!

The biggest problem I have with PMS is that I know I am not the mom that my kids need when I'm going through it. I fly off the handle, I'm so impatient and unloving. It's not fair to them.

My PMS has gotten worse with each child! (I have 3) I homeschool my 2 daughters ages 5 & 7 and turn into "psycho mom" for about a week every month...depressed, angry, I just want o be ALONE! And there is no alone time as a homeschooling mom. I know I need to find ways to handle it, so this book seems SO helpful!
I am going to the conference Nov 7-8 and so if I don't win it I may have to buy it!

I know my husband and my little ones would love it if I were able to stay calmer during PMS. I am so easily angered at times and my emotions just go crazy, I'd love it if I were able to be more myself. This book sounds like it would be great, because I would hate for me to get worse as I age!

I've been sending an S.O.S. for PMS for three years
written by Kaia, October 15, 2008
Ever since having my twins almost 4 years ago, I have struggled with severe PMS symptoms. During that week including the days just before and just after starting, I have such intense mood swings. My husband usually takes the brunt of it. Having discussed the problem with my ob/gyn, he recognized having 4 kids in 3 years (they are now 7,6, and 2 who almost 4) includes a great amount of stress that takes a toll. I have been trying to avoid being medicated for the PMS, so I look forward to the ideas this book might include.

This book sounds like every women's dream...any help in dealing with the dreaded PMS every month is worth a read for sure. a mom who loses it!
written by Cathy, October 20, 2008
This book would definately help me. Every month I feel like I turn into this psycho mom with my young children. I try to explain that I am just grumpy and not feeling good, but after eventually getting on their case about something that really is not eternally important, I think to myself, where in the world did that attitude come from. I notice that when I eat better around my monthly cycle, I tend to handle things a lot better. I am hoping this book will give me great insight. Thanks!

An Answer To Many Prayers
written by Lisa, October 25, 2008
I have been looking for something just like this. I have four children ages 9, 8 and twins who are turning 5. It seems my moods have been getting worse the week before my period. I would tell my husband I think there is something wrong with me. He would say, Oh, you are just tired. You are taking care of 4 children and you are just wiped out. I would beat myself up and think I was not a good mom because I would loose my cool and then I would tell myself that I should do better managing it because I have God in my life and I can not use PMS as an excuse but I am slowly realizing that there are physical things that happen to our bodies. I would love to know how I can take steps to make things better. Sorry this was long!!!!!!!!

A run to the store
written by illinibaby1, October 27, 2008
So during my PMS, well actually I was already cycling at that point, when DH came home (he had been gone 3 days prior and missed the lovely PMS phase) I said I had to run to the store to get more tampons. No questions were asked as I headed out the door. Two hours later I straggled in w/ my box of tampons and sanity. I spent that time shoping sans kids and husband. I was having so much fun I almost forgot the important purchase. Earlier that day I had been one grouchy mama. As I put on a video for the kids while I cooked dinner, I appologized to my kids for being so grouchy. My 3yr old then came over put her hand on my shoulder and told me that "you should take a nap. It will make you feel less grouchy." So I took her advice and went and read a book for 15 min while the fish sticks cooked. So my advice is to take a nap and then get out of the house to buy those monthly goods, BY YOURSELF!!!

I would like to win this book to give to my sister. She has 2 overly active young boys, and you can just see her tolernce levels drop each time. You can also tell when you find the boys sitting like perfect genlteman. "Go ahead, move, make my day". LOL.... Myself I wouldn't even need PMS to have them drive me nuts. Thank heaven for little girls. smilies/wink.gif I knew there was a reason I liked that song. LOL....

Myself, my PMS only lasted one or 2 days each cycle. And got better with age.

What did you do with my mommy?
written by Jennifer, October 28, 2008
Wow! This book would be perfect for the mere fact that I have been noticing that once a month I become an angry mommy and my family can't do ANYTHING right. I seem to be triggered by the smallest things, even the sound of my little ones laughing to loud. I hate the way my children look at me and the way my husband responds to my moods. I'm not me, I'm some wicked witch that my children don't know and my husband probably thinks that Adam should have ate the apple!

Am I really that great at hiding it?
written by Renee, October 28, 2008
My husband always tells me that I handle each time of the month with ease and grace. Yeah, right. He may think that I am handling it with the greatest of ease but I feel like a wreck inside. Just the other day I was thinking about what a downer women experience each month when the PMS symptoms start to show and I feel guilty because I wonder what kind of a mother I am to my two year old. I am tried in the areas of love, patience and sometimes say things I do not mean to those that are closest to me.

What a great resource for women!
written by Amy, October 28, 2008
As a teacher, I love to read, learn, and share. I would love to learn more about this topic and SHARE this book with my sister-in-law who is a single mom. I believe some of her depression and struggles revolve around the issue of PMS. Plus, I think it would be a great read for all women. The more we know... the better wife, mom, sister, daughter, or friend that we can be in following God's purpose in our life.
