Loving Your Spouse without Spending a Penny PDF Print E-mail

altValentine’s Day is almost here. Some of you may be expecting to receive sparkling treasures or oodles of red roses, but others of us have a dramatically reduced gift budget for the year and are wondering how to express love under these new constraints. But who says love can only be expressed through extravagant gifts?

The most meaningful gifts I’ve received from my husband have been those that have cost him little in terms of money but demonstrate his willingness to invest himself into expressing his love. Here are some cheap or free ideas to show your sweetheart love this Valentine’s Day.

  • Write or print the words “I love you” in creative ways and leave them scattered around the house. One paper could say "I love you" backwards, another could be written across the page in a heart shape.
  • Revive and modernize the mix tape. Make a love song play list and load it onto his iPod.
  • Let him know how often you think of him by sending an email or text message every time you see or think of something reminding you of him.
  • Splurge by using a couple hours of time off from work to spend time together.
  • Take a trip down romance memory lane by presenting her with a list of 10 of the most romantic times you can remember spending together.
  • Fill a dozen clear red balloons with small candies or notes. Blow them up and have them delivered to the office.
  • Replace your regular bedroom lighting with red light bulbs to set the mood for a romantic evening at home.
