As moms, the holidays provide many gift giving opportunities. Not only do we have our immediate and extended family members to think of when it comes to remembering them with a present, but we have numerous others in our life that we’d like to shower with a token of our love and appreciation; the mailman, our child’s teacher or bus driver; the dentist or hairdresser.

But sometimes we worry that the gift may not be a wanted one. Perhaps it will just take up space or be something that winds up in a garage sale or donated to Goodwill. What’s a mom to do?

Give a yummy, consumable gift, that’s what! Here is a cute, practical and easy idea to give to someone this Thanksgiving or Christmas. Turkey Noodle Soup in a jar!

This idea is even perfect to take as a hostess gift to your Aunt Patty who is hosting this year’s family celebration. She can use her leftover turkey to make this yummy soup on a blustery winter day. And the packaging idea provides the recipient with a new, holiday plaid dishcloth to boot. Here are the simple instructions:

Turkey Noodle Soup in a Jar Gift

Layer the following in a quart jar (or glass mayonnaise jar):

• 1/4 c. chicken soup base powder (if you can’t find it, see note below)
• 2 envelopes onion-mushroom soup mix (or just onion soup mix)
• 1/3 c. split peas
• 3 or more cups thick, hearty, old-fashioned egg noodles (I use Amish Kitchens’ Kluski noodles)

Note: If you can’t find chicken soup base powder, use four chicken bouillon cubes and place them in the jar last.

Place lid on jar and then secure a new, plaid holiday dishcloth, folded in quarters, and centered on top with a rubber band. Tie some ribbon or raffia around the jar, hiding the rubber band. Attach a tag cut from card stock that says the following:

Turkey Noodle Soup

• 8-10 cups water    
• 1/4 cup butter  
• 2 stalks celery, finely chopped  
• 1 carrot, thinly sliced
• 1 onion, chopped    
• 4 cups chopped, cooked, leftover turkey breast meat

In a large soup pot, sauté veggies in butter until tender. Add water, turkey and Turkey Noodle Soup Mix. Simmer over medium heat until the peas are tender, about 45 minutes. Enjoy!
