Blog: Calendar Pages PDF Print E-mail

This year seems to have melted away as quickly as a popsicle on the back porch in July. Usually by this time I've visited the stationery aisle of my favorite office-supply store for new calendar pages to fill up the purse calendar that acts as my brain-on-the-go.

Somehow I've not done that yet, so there are scraps of paper littering my desk with notes like “call for dentist appt. – April” or “check with principal re eval – Feb.”

And you know what the chances are that I'll lose some of those notes if I don't get them recorded on my calendar soon? Right – about 110%. And that's assuming I'll even remember what notes like “check w/ js re gtwy” means!

Why does time seem to go so quickly?

I'm sure I was just clipping this year's calendar into place, admiring all the white space and margin it offered, thinking about the possibilities each day held. Now that calendar is full of penciled-in phone numbers, crossed out notes, and additions to the lists of things I need to get done. It's a somewhat messy record of busy days.

Those clean white pages seem luxurious, as if I'm rich with time, but that's an illusion. What I'm rich in is opportunity.

Each one of those blank days represents an opportunity to love, to serve, to rejoice in this life we've been given. I don't want to forget that.

I don't want to forget that I have choices to make about how to spend those days. Even if the things I do are already determined by my circumstances, I always have a choice about my attitude.

I don't want to forget that there are others for whom each of those blank days represents another day filled with difficult challenges or loneliness. I don't want to be so caught up in my own life that I forget others.

I don't want to forget that each and every one of those days is a gift, a chance to appreciate what God has created, to know Him better, love Him more, serve Him more faithfully.

I'm ordering those calendar pages today, and when they come, I'm adding a few things to the notes I already have.

I don't want to forget my real priorities.

So true. Thanks for a fresh perspective on the daily planner. I've been reviewing my New Year's goals each night and trying to brainstorm their application to the next day -- it's helping me stay focused more than usual.
